Steve Wins in the 5L Hydroplane Finals at Manson, WA

Huff Motorsports competed at the Norm Evans Memorial Regatta at the Manson HydroFest 2017 in Manson, WA on Lake Chelan, Sept 30-Oct 1, 2017. This is owner/driver Steve Huff's first official full race weekend after completing his qualifying races at Lake Spanaway 2 weeks prior.

Steve had hydroplane racing legend and former owner of our Agitator E98, Wally Johnston, on the radio coaching him through first full race weekend in the season final for Division 10 hosted by Seattle Inboard Hydroplane Assn.

Day 1: Agitator E98 wasn't responding well. Steve would get a good race position for the running start, but would soon lose placement. Taking the hydroplane back to the pits with a lot of great people, including Wally Johnston, running the check list and trying to figure out why the 5L engine wasn't performing to her potential as the current World Record holder.

Then it happened, someone asked if we had checked the throttle cable. Could it be that simple? Sure enough, the throttle cable had stretched over the last 2 races. The Agitator had been running on only 1/3 throttle. ONE THIRD!! But they still finished 3rd.

Day 2: Steve was excited to run the Agitator at full throttle! Heat 1: Steve was in the mix with a good 2nd lane position at the start, but if racing was easy, everyone would do it. The first corner and ... SPLASH.. washout. The engine died. Steve got her started again, but it was too late when you are racing in less than a mile course.

Final Race of the season: The winds had picked up and the water had a heavy chop, especially on the 2nd corner. Steve got into lane 3 and had a great start. In the start you will see in the video (linked below) that he hit the start line 1/10 of a second after the mark, followed immediately by 2017 National Champion driver and newly Hall of Fame inductee, Jeff Bernard and 2017 APBA Point Champion boat of Jim Mauldin being driven by Austin Eacret. Steve had the start, full throttle, and was in it to win it. Taking the Final by a half lap. Sweet success!!
